And at the same
time, the vaunted General Robert E Lee has been stopped in Gettysburg , PA. General Meade’s Union forces turned him back,
including a heroic stand by the men from Maine
led by Colonel Joshua Chamberlin. As Lee
hobbles back into Virginia ,
one wonders if the great general will soon lay down his sword and surrender.
Our reporters were
present on the battlefield of Gettysburg
when President Lincoln gave what this paper believes is one of the most
memorable speeches in American history.
In his address at Gettyburg, Lincoln reminds us that, “Four score and
seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation,
conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created
equal.”
Do you hear that, America ? ALL MEN ARE EQUAL. Tell that to the brave soldiers of the
Massachussettes 54th regiment – all negroes led by brave white
officers like Colonel Robert Shaw. Tell
that to the slaves hiding in the underground railroad. Tell that to our neighbor Queen Victoria.
All men are equal…
as they lay silent and bloody, side by side on the hallowed ground of Gettyburg
and Vicksburg . Will the South – finally – listen?
The South may have lost its last foothold in this war, but let this be known; at least we had the courage to hold the American ideal of standing for what we believe. We have not totally given up, and I applaud General Lee's resilience and bravery. These slaves are the property of the good white citizens who purchased them. The passing of the Fugitive Slave Act only proves that slavery is in fact, Constitutional. And all men were not created equal. There will always be those who are smarter or more cunning, faster and more athletic. There is no such thing as equal in our universe. Even the dead are not completely equal because there will always be the few individuals whose names will pass through history, a whisper of a legend or as a fragment of story. How dare this newspaper claim that all people are on equal footing, even as the government we have is more unequal than the length of day and night in the warm summer days?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite holiday, the marking of our new nation, ruined by this war. As the war trudges on i grow tired of this. @JackHinson should've taken me out awhile ago now Ima beat the south single handedly @RobertE.Lee make sure to blame @JackHinson's sniping skills for costing you the war you took away my fireworks I take away all your slaves. #Boom! #SlaveryIsWrong #IWantToGoHome
ReplyDeleteWhen this war began we were only fighting to bring the south backs the Union but I have issued the emancipation proclamation saying that all slaves are free and are equal to white men! We are fighting to end slavery as well as being our beautiful nation back together! I gave my address at Gettysburg to show that the north will continue to fight! I am confident that we can win this war! We soon will capture Vicksburg and will have full control of the Mississippi! I believe the war will be over soon and the Union will be United once more!
ReplyDeleteThe South is as cruel as a blade. I've seen them round up so many women and children like cattle to be taken back to the plantations. One woman was begging for her children, and she received no fruit for her efforts. Some of the negroes raised in this neighborhood were taken along, and not one of us, white or black, could raise a finger to help them against the soldiers. In this we are equal: our helplessness. It hurts my heart to see humans treated this way, and I hope this war would help to realize what is human and precious.
ReplyDeleteMy Union is fighting bravely and hard to ensure the freedom of the slaves and the unification of this country. By now I have fashioned myself a spy network to get my information over enemy lines and to the Union. I have used many brave black men and women that carry out their tasks with the utmost precision and success, and let me tell you Southerners that black men and women are no different, if not stronger than the white. With Union victories occurring more commonly now, I expect not much time to pass until the Union can capture Richmond, and I can finally feel at home when I walk on the street. I look forward to not dreading going out if only to see black men and women slaving in their master's neglect and mistreatment. The South's cruel culture that I must live in and be an outcast in shall soon be defeated by my Union, who will save this country from the evils of slavery and cession once and for all.
ReplyDeleteAll men are equal. Why can't those ignorant southerners understand that? What right do you have judging a human being by color? Or gender? Just the fact that you think anyone can be used as a tool for your own benefit, disgusts me from the very bottom of my heart. Us northerners are triumphing as we crush the measly and weak southern defenses and it wont be long until Richmond is ours. I can't wait for the day to come when women, blacks, Mexicans, whites, or anyone of any race can walk on the same street or eat at the same restaurant or live In the same household. You just wait...

I do not care for the slaves anymore, whether they are free or not. I hate the Union for killing my sons. That is the reason for my war. Sure I have slaves, but I am a nice owner. I was planning on freeing them anyways. The war to me is revenge on the North, for beheading my sons and putting them on my gatepost. I will not stop till I have killed the soldiers that ruined my life. All the politics were nonsense to me. I don't care why us, the Confederates, and the Union are fighting. The reason I fight, is for revenge.

How can you say you are a nice owner if you do not care for slaves. Slaves and African Americans are humans too. I would know, since I am a former slave. I serve my country just like my fellow white soldiers. There is no reason to think blacks are inferior if they have more courage than you to fight for their country. You would not have risked your life like the black men of the 54th regiment did. They were fighting because they love their country and would do anything to keep it unified, not for revenge over something that happened in the Heat of a battle. The men who killed your sons were defending their country, which is something greater than 2 boys.
DeleteSure Jack Hinson. Im sure you are a very "nice" owner. You don't care about slaves? What was that earlier about you saying slaves made the farm run and prosper? The only reason you are fighting the war is for revenge? Two wrongs don't make a right. Are you going to take your anger out on Union soldiers that had nothing to do with your sons beheading? Besides, you are a sad excuse of a man. You cower back with your little sniper. I am more of a man than you. I went to the front lines as soon as I could to treat men in need. They call me the "angel of the battlefield". They should call you the "old geezer of the South". You really to need to learn how to spell. Really, nuetral? (In the Suprising South).

DeleteGoing to war for revenge might not be the best answer to solve the death of his two sons, but calling him a coward took it too far. Jack Hinson's "little sniper" has gotten him over 100 confirmed kill and is slowly destroying your "great" army. By the way, being in the army, no matter what position doesn't make you a coward. Even if you consider him a coward, he has many more kills than you'll ever have, He is fighting for the South using strategy, unlike the Union army. Before you call Jack Hinson an "old geezer," remind your self he has made a larger impact than you. #KeepOnSnipingJackie

Ya Southerners- did you hear that? All men are created equal! All men, WOMEN, and children, no matter their race or religion, are equal. So why are they still fighting? Too blue at the mizzen? How many more men must die and suffer to make the South see that slavery must be abolished (and women get equal rights too). Now that Abraham Lincoln's Anaconda Plan has been accomplished, defeat for the Southerners is as clear as day. This is not just a victory for the North, bit for mankind. It is a big step to making the world a better place.

All men created equal. That line was in the constitution but until now no one seemed to care that black men are men as well. It feels me with great pride and honor that the 54th regiment is receiving widespread respect. Respect that they deserve. The war is all but over now. The south has no more reason to fight, other to spill blood unnecessarily. I agree with Ms Batron. This is not only a victory for the north, but a victory for mankind.
ReplyDeleteYes, all men are equal. We've heard it before. Explain to me why slavery is still plaguing our country. Explain to me why women are still considered weak when they are the ones running our hospitals and factories. We are all humans and we deserve to be treated the same. The color of out skin does not determine our character. Yet we are at war because we cannot see eye to eye on the most basic human rights. Please get your heads out of your behinds and realize what is happening to country!
ReplyDeleteAll men are created equal? Bah! The war does not decide black suffrage, states rights, or any Southern politics. It is absolute bosh for Northerners to think that by winning this war, every thing will be solved. No, the emancipation shall fail, for even in the North, there is racist opposition of civil rights for blacks. Is this what you call equal? Even if the North were to win this war, nothing shall be gained, and the South would only be stripped of its value, culture, and heritage. Nothing, I say, nothing good will ever come out of this. If we were all to know that, why don't you Northerners just leave us in peace? Let us leave, and leave all the trouble behind.
ReplyDeleteAll men are equal. Something many of us knew already and didn't need a bloody war, and dead bodies to tell us that. Now I hope that the Confederacy will see that blacks are not property but men, women, and children. Just like whites. This war might soon be over and I cannot wait for the end.
ReplyDeleteAll men are created equal. The south is too dumb to realize the all men black and white are equal. If I were still alive today I would say, the only way to show the south is through violence. We have already tried to be peaceful but now its time to finish are plan. Capture Vicksburg. We need to take all our men and do what ever is necessary to capture Vicksburg and set slaves free in the south. Making all men, blacks and whites equal.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, I agree all men are created equal. I oppose secession, although I live and am a general in the South. The fight continues in Gettysburg, the battle is uneven. General Ulysses S. Grant steadily leads his army and pushes South. I hold strong but am afraid my army shall not. We are begining to weaken, although we fight strong the I'm sad to say we may not finish this last battle strong.
ReplyDeleteThe South should finally listen, after all this bloodshed and death they have to. We have cut right through them and if they will not listen there will only be more death. They have to free the slaves and finally let the slaves be treated as equals and farm for themselves. The North will prevail and the South will fall, there is only the one answer to this whole war and it will end with the North victorious.
ReplyDeleteAfrican Americans are not subhuman; they think like we do, feel like we do, so why shouldn't they be able to live like we do? The United States was founded around the phrase "All men are equal". Then why has slavery not been abolished? Why are we still fighting over basic human rights? Haven't our Founding Fathers made it crystal clear that all men were created equal?
ReplyDeleteI don't care much about slaves, but other southerners do. Sense I'm fighting for the South, I guess I'll just not bother doing much about it. This fight isn't just about slavery, it is about Northerners taking away Constitutional rights. Let the south secede! Nothing in the constitution says anything against seceding. Just let us secede North and peace will flow within. I am not one bit afraid of the Union Army. They stand no chance against our great generals, including me. Bring it on Unionists, no plan will defeat us.

ReplyDeleteOur constitution is the base of our country. Right? Apparently not, because not all of the ammendments are being followed. All men are created equal. That may be true. But not all men are being treated equal. The founders of our counrty had a vision in mind for how our country would be run. This is not it. Slavery is not treating all men equal. And all men, every single one of them, are equal.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I feel as though this war should not be being fought in the first place. Men are dying, good men, brave men, for what? I can see no possible solution to the rift slavery has caused in the States. There will always be a burning hatred among some people. We are all Americans. Why must we pay the price that this war has caused? However, if we must fight this war, I am somewhat pleased with the outcome so far. The Union blockade has cut off the Confederation's trade, and the capture of Vicksburg has split their forces in half.

This victory at Gettysburg is another step closer to the abolition of slavery. We have finally gotten the recognition of being an actual person not 3/5 of a person. They deserve to be treated equally the same as the white men. i would like to see whites doing the work we have done our whole life, and not being considered a full person, and being called property. They have no idea how it feels! What makes them so much better than us?
ReplyDeleteIt is very difficult to watch so many amazing lives be lost, yet they are lost for a good cause. The blood is real but so is the unjustice of America. I am however aware of the great losses we have undergone and the battle of Gettysburg has brought death tolls bigger then I could have ever imagined.
ReplyDeleteThe north is now finally making an indent in this bloody battle. We have forced lee back and now have the momentum! We can't stop here, and we defiantly won't. Hopefully this horrid war will be over soon. The north will prevail!
ReplyDeleteWe were all created equally by the Lord our Father. We are all Brethern and the color of our skin and our beliefs are the only difference that comes between us. All men were created equally. To those who engage in the Massachusetts 54th regiment, to the blacks who have fought for us, we will strive to end this war quickly with a victory for the north and all of our brothers and sister will be treated equally. The fireworks, bombs, and rockets will remind us of the equality we fight for. The fields of blood and broken bodies will help us fight for victory and for our brothers and sisters. The south is brutal and doesn't deserve victory. Lets fight for our equality but lets make it quick.
ReplyDeleteIndependence day is hope for the future. It is the reminder for Americans, especially African Americans like me, that there is hope for freedom and equality. I am pleased that Vicksburg has been captured by General Grant. God has been on our side and has brought us a step closer to freedom. And of course, it is a great honor for the brave men of the 54th regiment who stopped at nothing to fight for their country. I believe that this valiant regiment is evidence that the black folks are no lesser human beings than the whites.
ReplyDeleteThe south is determined to get their slaves back... but that's not going happen.
I fully agree with President Lincoln. All men are created equal and we are working to make sure that the South learns that too. Think of it this way, every death now it this war, is one death less for a slave being beaten to death, getting heat stroke, or being whipped to death. The slaves are being treated so badly, that however many deaths are caused in this war, it will be worth it. The Union will never stop fighting. WE WILL WIN!
