A HOUSE DIVIDED

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA. The United States… are united no more.  On February 4th, delegates from seven states, seven SOUTHERN states, seven SECEDED states, seven servants of that tyrant, KING COTTON, mutinously gathered like bloody pirates and created a new ship of state – The Confederate States of America.  And why?  Because a REPUBLICAN was elected president.  A no-name country lawyer from Illinois with the folksy moniker of “Honest Abe.”  Honest?  We shall see.  Honest Abe has promised not to abolish slavery where it already exists.  He promises this despite the howls from the self-righteous abolitionists who claim to know what is better for the black man than the black man himself.  Lincoln promises the abolitionists that he will not let slavery spread.  Isn’t this enough to appease the Quakers, the Ministers, the Moralists?  No.  no one is happy.  NO ONE IS HAPPY.  And now our beautiful country lies broken and wounded.  One can only imagine the salivating wolves like Mexico and Great Britain ready to pounce upon America’s helpless carcass and tear us into further pieces.  What are we to do with these 7 rebellious states?  How can we shut the shrill voices of the abolitionists crying for blood?  Will it be war?

EDITOR’S NOTE !!!   It has come to the attention of this publication that spies for both North and South are already afoot.  Specifically, there is talk of a plot against our new President’s life.  This paper urges all Americans to be vigilant.

  1. I was just an unimportant lawyer from Illinois, just because I was elected president gives the southern states no right to leave the union! This is an unconstitutional act done by those states. The worst part is that they have fired in the American flag. Attacking fort Sumer, part of the unions army! I believe that war is coming and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. I will not fight a war against slavery, even though it is a terrible act. But I will fight a war to keep the union in one piece. But I can't believe that the UNITED States of America would fight among themselves.

  2. I am a strong loyal citizen of Maine, a state that entered free of slavery. This division of our great nation is an opportunity to dissolve slavery altogether. If the North can overcome the South we can destroy slavery all together. The fighting will be easy if we just band together in an army that can beat the South.

  3. I support Mr. Lincoln's decision. Slaves should not be considered property. If a war breaks out then I will support whatever side Mr. Lincoln backs. I'm a real curly wolf so I want to fight for my side. If we gather enough supporters then the South is a goner.

  4. The south has made a terrible mistake. There is no chance they can defend against the night of the United states. I support Mr Presidents decision but I believe that slavery should never be in America again. I am prepared to fight and risk my life for my country. i have nothing to lose

    2. How has the South made a terrible mistake? If slavery is to be abolished, then paid servitude will surely come into play. And how is paid servitude any better than slavery? Does it only take only a few pennies to assuage your guilt and proclaim that meager wages that can scarce support a family is justice?

We may not be able to stand against a better armed North, however, if we are to be defeated, you may steal our freedom, steal our land, and steal beliefs as well, but know this: without our lands' agriculture, this Union is none. And without slaves to bear our burden, you are merely condemning your own children to the labor. YOUR OWN CHILDREN, your flesh and blood, the babes you have cared for since the cradle! So Southerners, heed my words! They may have weapons, but we have spirit! Without us, they are nought but dust to be blown away by wind!

    3. I think that if the president is going to end slavery, we should end our life! All abolitionists are stupid and niggers don't deserve a good life. We should put an end to "honest abe" and all the abolitionists too. Also, the seven states don't have the right to rebel. They have agreed to being United to us and they don't have the right to leave.

    4. Mr. Scobell,
Slaves are property, not people. If you claim slavery shall be abolished, who will work in your fields an offer you cheap labor? No white man will fall for foolish pay, they demand income. Sir, if you fight I fight and the South will stand right behind me.

    5. Antonia ford and Robert E. Lee, I know the hardships first hand of being a slave and trust me, anything, I tell you, anything is better than 24/7 labor with no pay. That isn't the worst part. The worst part is that you have the knowledge that your parents, your sisters, your brothers... your children have to be condemned to this. You two would not know the life of a slave. You have no right to tell me that it is just.

  5. My state has wound up part of new states. We are the confederate of states. I wasn't particulary happy with this decision, but I kind of knew it would happen eventually. There has been lots of tension in my area, because we are near the border. This new act we have done has made my town more violent. Already there has been talk of raiding antis lavers towns and burning them to the ground. I have not participated in this violence, but I hope it doesn't come kno on my door.

  6. As a citizen of the South I am deeply disappointed in my state at its decision to succeed from the Union. I do not won't to go to war. I will now have to try and get a job such as a field overseer so they won't drag me to war. We started a war with someone who has more people, guns, and resources. It was a very big mistake.

    1. Mr. Henson,
You are shooting your mouth off publicly, making a fool of yourslef. The South needs your support, not your dissapointment. If you don't believe that war is the answer, what is? You cannot critisize a decision made to better the lives of many people without having a different idea. As for your thoughts on the North having more then us: we have more passion and desire, we have money, and we have reason to be mad at those we are fighting. We can win the battle, despite what you clearly believe.

    2. Mr. President,
You have nine states. The Union has the rest of the country, and its territories. Not to mention the millions of slaves that, if they were to start to fight would put, the Confederacy to the ground. You and your "new nation" are just states acting like spoiled brats because you didn't get your way. So what we have a Northern President? We could have worked this out, but not anymore.

    3. Mr. Henson,
I would like to remind you of something Philip. It is not only myself who has nine states, it is yourself as well. You are referring to the states but mostly the citizens of those states as spoiled brats, yet you yourself belong to them. Abe Lincoln is not fit for the position of President, and he is uncabable of leading the country. You woke up the wrong passenger today, and I hope you light a shuck because the South is better off without people like you.

    4. Mr. President,
Since the age of 12 I have been traveling the country. I have been as far west as New Mexico, and as far North as New York. As someone with first hand knowledge of our great nation, I do believe that Mr. Lincoln is far more suitable to run a country then you are. And their are plenty of Southerners that believe the same thing I do, who if needed will go fight for the Union. Remember Mr. Davis you need everyone you can get, if you want a chance against the North.

    5. Mr. Henderson,
You seem well traveled, and well educated, yet you lack the knowledge of what to do with your talent. If you join the confederacy, you could do great things. I am deeply offended that you would pick a REPUBLICAN man over me, however you and I have never met one another or Mr. Lincoln for that matter. Therefore you are judging me without even knowing me, so I will not hold your words of bosh as true. You are right, I need everyone I can get. Everyone who is willing to fight for the confederacy and willing to fight to keep the states rights a prevelant idea. If you are willing, by all means join me, and join the Confederacy.

    6. Mr President,
I don't need to meet a man who is the leader of the succeeded states. I already know that this man destroyed a nation that our founding fathers fought for against Britian. I have no respect for that man and will show no respect to the armies that this man leads.

    7. Mr. Henderson,
Then as I said before, light a shuck.

  7. The seven states seceding is a completely and utterly necessary step for the South to defend itself. Furthermore, by seceding, the Confederate States can expand even further south, and fulfill our Founding Father's dream of a Sovereign nation. The new nation, which slavery still exists in, shall be the new glorified version of the old.
In addition, we are protecting the blacks from the unnecessary and immoral influence of the north. Slavery does not degrade a man, but elevates him. I have traveled to eastern Asia and back, and from what I have seen, the slaves here in the Old South are much better off than the slaves in the Orient.

    1. I couldn't agree with your wise words more. Seceding was and is necessary and people who say otherwise are lying. You have game, and I like that about you. Thank you for defending the Confederacy.

  8. I have devoted my life to creating a better world. The South seceding was inevitable, and so is a civil war. No one is happy. No one should be happy as long as slavery still exists. Don't shut the voices of the abolitionists crying for blood. Let their words ring out! Make the Southeners understand how cruel and inhumane slavery is. This civil war is needed to abolish slavery and unify the nation, making them the United States once again.

  9. The South has taken the liberty of seceding from the Union, and what a sorrowful sight indeed. The South's beliefs of slavery and secession are unjust. I have lived alongside slaves my whole life, and giving them freedom was one of the best things I have done. This is what we must fight for now: the unification of our freshly divided country, so we can free all the slaves in this country once and for all. The South seceding has just made this harder for the North, but fight we must; this nation is too glorious to be brought down by some farmers who don't want to give up their slaves.

  10. I do not have much input on President Lincoln. If he is dishonest, our Heavenly Parent will shed light on the issue in His own time.

The Southerners obviously do not hesitate to use violence to accomplish their goals. They have shown they will follow through their promises. I do not feel safe in my own home, even in the North. I live very close to Virginia. I have no wish for the States to go to war; my husband is very patriotic and will no doubt leave for the army, and blood will likely be shed on my doorstep.

  11. I have no reason to be angry at Lincoln. He seems like a somewhat nice fellow. However, the seven states that left the Union have made a terrible mistake. During when I served in the United States Military, the Mexican-American war was raging on. We lost many soldiers, LOYAL soldiers, fighting for the very states who have just left us. The lot of them are ungrateful heathens who insist that slavery is essential, and list it as the reason they have left. Slavery is the thing of the past. In this country, every man, woman, and child should have the freedom that no other country can promise.

  12. As a Northerner and an abolitionist, I express my shock over this new development. The seven Southern states that banded together could potentially be a power enough to threaten the Union. They call themselves the Confederate States. With such a large opposition, the Union would be in danger and war could possibly break out. Will there be a Civil War over the matter of slavery? We can't know for sure yet, but the Confederates definitely spell trouble for the North.

  13. What to do with these separate deities, I do not know. Conflict between the two "nations" will be unavoidable as the secession will only remind the North of why they hate the South. With the two sides of the slavery argument, anything could happen. Both sides have already had their noses bloodied and broken by the attempts to compromise, and before we know, we shall have a brawl on our hands. The abolitionists will only be sated by a permanent ban of slavery and the South cannot afford that. If war comes, and I surely hope not, mayhap will come an end to this hideous folly.

  14. War would be terrible, but is nessessary if the south doesn't give up now! The south should step down and give up their slaves, or else we will have to kill them to get our point across! I hope they know that if war is needed, we will win and we will NEVER back down! Finally, if the south doesn't yield right now, there will be no return, and either way they will lose their slaves. I suggest they pick the easy way, or they will all be abolished.

  15. The south has the right to succeed. If the abolitionists want to get these states back, they are going to have to fight for them. The North still doesn't get the South's economy. Crops are our way of money while machines are the Norths. How would you feel if we took away all those fancy machines from the North. The North is a little too cocky about beating the South. The North may have more people, but we have strategy. With great generals, sneak attacks, great spies, we are able to defeat the North if they go to war with us. Let us succeed or there will be war.

  17. The south's decision was a complete mistake. I agree with Lincoln that slavery should not spread. Yet these confederate states are a strong force that will have an impact on the Union. Will there be a civil war over slavery? There is a possibility, and if there is, the Union is in great trouble. I will support our president on whatever he decides to do. We will have to find a way to end slavery once and for all.

  19. I warned this nation of this childish behavior and now the inevitability of war has come to play. Go ahead, south, go ahead, secede and see what the outcome is. I think the decision made by out President was absolutely flawless. The nation has dug a hole of slavery so deep only the ladder of war can help us escape. The southerners hide the news and reality in the real world from the slaves, so they can never rebel or gain hope. But now the slaves can finally have a chance of fighting for their freedom and for the thousands of millions of slaves out there who do you think they're going to side with?

  20. As a citizen of the South and a dedicated member of the conferderacy, I couldn't be more pleased that we 9Southern states)have joined together. 'Honest Abe' has plans to not allow slavery to spread any further, yet he claims that slavery can continue where it already is. He is going to have to go through the mill while being President. The North might as well throw in the towel now, before any blood stains the clean American soil.

  21. Civil war is destined. Tensions between the North, the South and the government will grow. Although I have slaves and am a famous general in the south, I disagree with the spread of slavery into the North and West. Abe promises to be "honest", but I think the cries and pleads from the seven rebellious states will lead him one way or another to change the decision he made in the beginning. Civil war is inevitable, with the tension between the two sides grow, small raids and outbreaks will soon turn to inhumane violence.

  22. Lincoln is in a difficult position. he has made a strong attempt to unify our county but it has failed. he will need to put up an even bigger fight to keep our country as one. but the confederate states are making an even bigger fuss by Lincoln not making an effort to support slavery in other parts of the country. a civil war is approaching us. the United States of anerica are united no longer.

  23. Helping the other side is my job. Let the war come. I can deal with it. If this means standing up for our race and deserving what is right for us, then let the war come. Lincoln has not made such a good decision. Of course slavery is going to spread, you cannot stop people. If people can disobey the law of states, then they can also disobey the president. The war will come raging, and slavery will come to an end.

  24. I believe that Lincoln is not responsible for our broken country. I am not too sure what to think of him yet but he said he plans to stop slavery from spreading. Slavery being here in the first place is the cause for all of this. Us African Americans have been working for whites our whole life and its about time we change that. Lincoln needs to put all slavery to an end.

  26. Of course! The second things go wrong, everyone blames the president. Why are any of us surprised? I would like to point out that we were the ones voting him into office in the first place. Some of the blame must rest on our shoulders. Lincoln is trying to make a better country and all we do is whine about everything. "Secede this" "War that" We must communicate as a country if we want to get anything done at all! Let the South secede. Let them learn that we must be a united country. What they did was childish and we must harbor some of the blame.

  27. If I were still be alive today, I would say this is the perfect time to take strike. While the 7 States who call themselves the Confederate States of America are just forming, we need to take charge and attack once more. It has to be more planned out then the last attack where I was captured and then hung. If we have more people and a better leader we will be able to attack right.

  28. . Lincoln assures us that slavery will no longer spread but then also says that the states may continue to have slaves. Lincoln is not attempting to abolish slavery but to satisfy the north and the south. I'm hesitant about whether or not Lincoln is fit for presidency. He is unsure about his choices and that makes us abolitionists doubtful about him. It is crucial that Lincoln comes to a decision so that we can come to a final decision about him.

  29. I am very happy that the Supreme Court agrees with the south. Slaves are property not people. Abe Lincoln is not a fit president. And I will not be ruled by him.

  30. I believe that Lincoln is a good man. He is a wise man with good judgement and I am pleased that he has been elected as president. I do hope he keeps his word on preventing the spread of slavery. I think Lincoln had given his best effort to keep the Union together despite the secession. He tried to give a fair compromise for the pro-slavery folks but the United States still broke in two. The tension is high between the rebels and the Union...if there is war, let there be war. I am willing to fight this fight if it is for the freedom and equality of slaves.

  31. I have always had thought of Lincoln as a ace-high man, but i also believe that it may be time for us people to start thinking for the future. We need to be prepared for anyone and anything. I have learned is to be true, and it was an important concept that i reviewed often at Syracuse Medical College. If we aren't thinking a planning accordingly, we might be surprised and unprepared. A great example is medical supplies. I need the correct tools, medicines, and other equipment so I can fill my role in this troublesome time to the best of my ability. If i am not prepared, and don't have the correct materials, I could be risking someone's life.
