Editorial #8 LEE SURRENDERS!

APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE, VIRGINIA.  On April 9, 1865 in the Mclean house in the village of Appomattox Courthouse, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant, Commander-in-Chief of the Union forces.  In a sign that is pregnant with hope for the healing of a nation, General Grant allowed the defeated Lee to keep both his sword and his beloved horse, Traveller.

This paper can understand Grant’s (who was certainly acting on Lincoln’s orders) desire to not humiliate the humble and capable Lee.  But should the North be so kind to the rest of the South?  Consider:  625,000 dead; over 412,000 wounded – many of them without arms, legs, and eyes; billions of dollars of property damage; a skyrocketing national debt due to the cost of the war; and finally, perhaps the greatest cost, a nation of people with hatred, anger, and even revenge swelling in their breasts.  Have we truly seen an end to fighting?

Several Confederate armies still exist, especially General Johnston’s army in Tennessee.  Will they surrender?  This paper also wants to know what will be done with Southern leaders like President Jefferson Davis.  For many Northerners, hanging seems too good for Jeff Davis.  Hang John Brown and not this traitor?

And then there is the Negro problem.  Suddenly millions of freed slaves will flood our cities, fill our jobs, demand schools and homes.  Will they reek their own special vengeance on their humiliated Southern masters?  It is hard to believe that bloodshed is truly over.  Even so, this paper rejoices with the news that the end of the war is at hand, and this paper has total confidence in President Abraham Lincoln to continue to guide this country back to the thriving Union it was and hopes to be.

  1. If I were still alive today I would say: Finally this is what we have been fighting for this long, dreadful, and bloody war. At the beginning all abolitionist thought ending slavery would be through peaceful speeches, and gatherings. But no they were wrong, the only way to end slavery was through violence. Starting with my raids in Kansas, and then Harpers Fairy to 3 years of bloody warfare. We had our ups and downs losing over 600,000 people but it was necessary to end slavery. Now the union is back together and the country is one, there will still be hate towards the blacks from the South but now they are free. There will still be conflict between the North and South but now we are one country!

  2. Now that America is reassembled, I will Try to lead this country with the best of my ability. I am glad the Lee and the south surrendered. It is terrible how many people died during this war, and I hope our country learns from this and never has another civil war. We must start by rebuilding the south and honoring our dead, but I know our nation can live on for America will never truly die!

  4. I am happy to know the war is over, although I will be losing my slaves. I have killed over a hundred Union soldiers and officers. I know that over 10 of my friends have died and also my friends (that are still left) families have at least one member dead. The civil war has taken quite a toll on the South and am relieved it's over. I dont know what I will do now with no slaves and no sons.

    1. Really Jack Hinson!?!?! After tens of thousands of Americans have died all you can say is that "10 of my friends have died" you should be ashamed of yourself because everything is about you isn't it... all you talk about is your sons dying. GET OVER IT! You need to think about how the South has brought this war upon themselves, by having slaves. You have slaves and are an inhumane person who #gotwrecked

    2. Thaddeus, how could you say such?! You should be ashamed to side with the North. Your hideous assumptions that the South has only inhumane people is not only wrong, but racist. If you want to play such games, then I have a few arguments to pick with you. The North believes that with power in its favor, it can stifle the South. The South has risen up in rebellion to defend itself, to keep itself from being beaten down once again. You say that South brought the war upon themselves, yet without the North's idiotic morality and hypocrisy, this war would not have happened. Think before you speak, Thaddeus. What you think is true may be a lie told to you, a whisper of deception in the dark. Mayhap Jack Hinson brought up the matter of his sons too much, but are you a father? Do you know a father's pain when one of his son is ripped from him by death? Do you ever wonder about the struggle he went through? He doesn't believe in slavery, but sided with the South because the North is, as Sarah Emma Edmond said earlier, overly trigger happy. You and your beliefs disgust me; you are prejudiced, hypocritical, and most of all, blind to another's pain.

  5. The war is finally over! But now the reconstruction period starts which will be as hard if not harder than the war. We have Confederate soldiers, slaves, and Confederate states to deal with. Will there be a punishment for the soldiers that fought against us or the states that sent these men to fight us. And millions of slaves will need jobs. I hope President Lincoln has a plan because I sure don't know what we're going to do.

  6. This dreaded war is over, and I am rejoicing! What a moment! avenging wrath appeased in flames! Justice, truth, humanity were vindicated when the Union had at last broken through Southern forces and stormed into Richmond. Oh, army of my country, how glorious was your welcome! My mission now is to find and restore valuable documents in the ruins of the Confederate War Department building. My Union had prevailed, slavery is over, and my country is finally united again! I am confident slaves will find a valuable way to help this country: during this war I have found some of my most dedicated and talented spies in black skin. After 4 bloody years of brave fighting, the growth of my spy network and my impact in the Union's success, I am proud to relax in my Southern mansion without witnessing slavery and cession mania on my doorstep!

  8. The war may be over, the reconstruction may be beginning, but much of the country is in shambles. Every family has been touched by death's hands, and many people live in grief, knowing that they will never see their loved ones again. And all this, for the North's pride and so-called morality!

However, by releasing all the slaves, the North has unleashed a plague. For some, jobs are already hard to find; by flooding the industry with former slaves, those hard-working white citizens will find it even harder to find honest jobs with high enough pay to support a family. Northerners, your joy will turn to ashes in your mouths; dark days will come when white men are beggars, with starved bodies and desperate souls.

I hope the South will keep fighting, even without General Lee's brilliance guiding our troops into battle. Even as I waste away in Old Capitol Prison, I won't give up hope. Hope is a fragile thing, easy to shatter, but something uplifting enough to keep me sane as I live in filthy conditions, with the reek of urine in the air. Those who once complained of the South treating their prisoners poorly are the most hypocritical swine to walk this earth. Prisoners here are falling ill, and I find myself weakening as every day passes.

But I have only one question now. When will the brave Southern troops be treated with the respect they deserve? They were the ones who stood for what they believed, rather than rallying with hopes for glory.

  9. The war may be over for some people, but the South will forever remember this. Just think of what you have done Northerners. Killing 625,000 men just to prevent the South from it's constitutional right to secede. I hope you northerners know that you have just ruined the economy. Not just with war, but releasing slaves into the community. Good luck getting a job with these slaves running around. The war may be over for the North, but the South doesn't give up this easily. Watch your back Northerners, or you might just start another war.

    1. This is for arguing against my argument Stonewall.
They call you Stonewall for being tough and unable to fall? More like you got so stoned (by Northerners) you had to lean against a wall!(It is a medieval punishment). Your insults arguments are so lame, all you do is blame. Don't try to say this is all our fault. The Union will attack you so fast you won't even have time to say "halt". Sorry to pop your bubble, but here comes the North to turn Stonewall into rubble. Couldn't help it. Sorry! I am usually a very nice, caring lady. Now that we are countrymen/women again I hope the nation can rebuild itself and stay united for eternity.

    2. Clara Barton, by saying that "you are usually a nice caring lady", you are merely raising excuses. Your words today, as well as your past posts show you as everything but nice, kind, or compassionate. If you are to be a representative of what the North is like, then America will be everything BUT united. Your low blows and idiotic insults have done nothing but make me laugh until my stomach is hurting and I am gasping for breath at your utter stupidity. The war is the fault of both sides, so you may not say that it WASN'T your fault because, in part, it really WAS. It appears that although you accuse Stonewall Jackson for blaming the North, you are trying to blame the war on the South, which would make you just as bad as us Southerners in your eyes. You are no mightier than we are, Clara. Go ahead and ponder THAT.

  10. Ah! Just as I predicted. I told you didn't I! The good in a battle of good and evil, good always succeeds. The construction to rebuild the nation will be hard and many jobs will be filled with the vast amount of African Americans that were freed. And to the families of lost ones, I am sorry but the cost of there death is one step from a better America, so step by step we will begin to recover and thrive to become the greatest country anyone has ever seen. To those who think that the south will strike again, good luck because the north has annihilated the south and now we have a bigger and better army with all the African Americans obviously siding with us! Yes, it may have been unconstitutional of us Unionists to forbade you from seceding, but I believe it unconstitutional to denounce human beings as a tool to use for income and to obey your every wish. I am glad to serve my country and free all African Americans!

  11. Thank the Lord that it is over! I believe the South will surrender the rest of their armies as 625,000 people have died. I saw the elephant and I'm sure the South doesn't want this bloodshed to continue. I have seen the horrors of war. That is why I will organize records to account for soldiers "missing in action" and plan to identify and mark at least 12,000 graves at Andersonville. As a former teacher, we must do everything we can to provide blacks with homes and schools. They are equal to us now. The war over slavery is won, but I fear that the battle for African American rights and women is still to come.

  12. The war has finally come to a close. All of the bloodshed has been for something. One can only hope that there never comes a time where america is deprived into halves. My work behind the scenes, racing between borders, spying on dimwitted southern generals, makes me honored to know that it came with a great outcome. However, I fear the reconstruction will leave me with less rights than I had before the war. Hopefully all of the former slaves get a crack at a decent living. The battle for equal rights is just beginning...

  13. I am very glad that this war is over. I have high hopes for my future career in the U.S. Military. Also, the brave men of both sides can stop losing their lives over a pointless conflict. I do not know how much time it will take to mend the void that this fight has created, but we have come to a temporary compromise, and that is enough for me. It was an honor to lead these brave troops into battle, and I bid you all farewell.

  14. It is a relief that the war is over. Unfortunately General Grant and his troops defeated my Confederate Army. Despite the disappointment, Grant's sincerity was well accepted. I have fought many battles and I'm sad to say this will be my last. John Brown's actions were foolish and irresponsible. He must be sentenced to death immediately. I do not anticipate General Johnston's army surrendering any time soon.

  15. We the Southern States who make up the Confederacy are both proud and dissapointed in what has happened. We are proud of the brave people who sacrificed their lives and money, and we are dissapointed by the outcome. We were fighting for rights that we believed to be held true by the Constitution, rights that Lincoln deprived our great nation of. However, I will say I am glad bloodshed will be over soon. I have just as well as everyone lost many many friends, family and I wish the outcome had justified their brave fighting.

  16. The war is finally over, but much hasn't changed with the African Americans, at least not as much as i thought would have by now. Coming into this war i believed that a Union victory was what we needed for the abolition of slavery. But still we are debating on things with African Americans. i trusted Lincoln, he proved he was determined to get a union victory and was a strong leader. I have now also learned that General Grant is an honest and strong leader also. I contributed a lot during the war, i was a nurse and a union spy. Since the war is over i now know what i need to do to get freedom for the African Americans!

  17. The war is over, and the South has lost. But, it is an accident that we were defeated. Even though we were defeated, I do not believe that this would dirty our Southern ways. I shall anticipate more armed conflict in the future, and solve this issue once and for all.
Even though the North has won, it shall not change any racist opposition for African American suffrage. Eventually, black servitude will be restored in the South, at the same time restoring our piece of culture.
In my book, The Lost Cause, which I will publish soon, will be a Southern history on the war. In it, I describe how we lost the war, as well as our Southern civilization and ways.

  18. Finally! This war has gone on for so long and it's about time that it's over. This war shouldn't have ever started, and now I can see how right I was because this is the bloodiest war that America will ever see. I hope that in the future Americans can learn from our mistakes and stay together as a union and get rid of racial discrimination forever! Also, when we are together, we are the strongest nation in the world, but if we split, we are more vulnerable and weak. In conclusion, I'm happy the war is over, but dissatisfaction with our country as a whole that we went to great lengths to start a war.

  19. We won! the war is over. What a relief to my family and i, as well as the entire union! But there is a downside. I originally didnt have a perspective on slavery, but now i will be forced to make a choice. Millions of "free" slaves will be roaming our cities with no place to stay or work and what will we do with them then? I don't know but i will have to soon. But for now i am going to go ohome, sit back and realax and enjoy my time with my family before another war or "country-wide" argument comes up.

  20. I am overjoyed that the war has reached a conclusion.
The constant fear and images of my husband falling and lying upon the bloody ground as he went to live with our Heavenly Father was unbearable. Upon his return I scarcely know how to react.

Only time will tell with the new slaves. Mayhap they will form their own communities. God willing, we shall rub along smoothly.

  21. The ending of the war is wonderful news! No more deaths and hatred and anger. Of course there will always be a noticeable tension between the North and South but as long we have found a way to approach our differences peacefully, our country can stand united once more. “My dear comrades, my heart is so full I cannot say what I would to you. Tears are in my eyes, but I shall never, never forget your love and kindness to Frank Thompson. All that I can say is that I am deeply grateful, and may God bless you.”

    1. The deaths may be over, Sarah, but the anger and hatred is not. You may find it easy to put this conflict to peace in your mind; you are not American; you come from the distant North. Based on your origin, you will likely find our petty battles to be none of your concern and easy to whitewash from your memories
      .
Peace will be near impossible, I think, this war has torn and shredded old wounds to the point that old grudges are becoming weeping sores. Tension between your people of the North and mine is something that will be unavoidable; revenge and justice will always be in the back of everyone's minds. Unity is something that will require a hefty price that neither side will want to pay.

  22. The union has finally won. We must rebuild our beloved country. As of now America is in tatters. The generals of the south should not be killed. There has been plenty enough bloodshed. I don't see a problem with all of the freed blacks looking for work and many using up some of our jobs. It's what we fought this we for. Right?

  23. Praise the Lord! The war is over and the North has attained victory! Forbid slavery to any man, almighty God! Slavery was a seed that grew in every soil but now our soil is clean from slavery. The existing confederate armies need to surrender so that this bloody argument will come to an end. The millions of free slaves will flood the cities, they fill your jobs, demand schools and homes, but that is nothing but fair to the slaves. Their lives were taken away and turned into a living hell. For years slaves had worked strenuous hours, we were beat to a pulp and now we are free. Slaves deserve jobs, schools, and homes, we are all people, the color of your skin shouldn't get between rights. We fought for the slaves freedom so lets truly give it to them.

  24. I am very relieved; the war have finally drawn to a close! I expect the North's long awaited victory shall be celebrated by abolitionists all over the country. I hope that this marks the end of an era of violence and the beginning of an evolved nation. There were innumerable casualties on both sides, and the whole nation is in debt. Although the North won, Southerners still fought very passionately and heroically until the end. I applaud you, South.

However, we shall not forget the reason for which this war came to be--slaves. What will become of them? As I had hoped and advocated, they are now free. But does that mean they will have the same rights as we do? I think not. The pro-slavery folks still number many. Undoubtedly, they will vote against giving African Americans as many liberties as white people. This will hinder our attempts to create a free nation where all men are equal. Although, I may not live to see it, I hope that the United States will one day be a model for other countries to follow in its footsteps.

  25. The war may be over but the war of racism is far from done. Today still people of color are being discriminated against based on their skin color. That is why I am running for governor of my great beloved state of Maine

  26. It is God we must thank for this ending war and that the bloodiest days have ended. But just because Lee has surrendered, I must agree with Joshua Chamberlain-the conflict and discrimination against racism will continue. This war will not be easy. Especially when now the white Americans feel threatened as they think we will steal their businesses. It may take years or decades for racism to stop. But one step at a time, right? Now that Lee has surrendered, I've numerous complaints that they should've been punished more, how they should've been humiliated. I admire Lincoln and Grant's decision not to shame Lee. We're not the only ones who have lost so many. They have paid their price too. Enough damage has been done.
